Q: What should I pack for my New Zealand South Island tour?

A: New Zealand's weather, especially in the South Island, can be changeable - sometimes all four seasons in one day! We recommend packing layers, including waterproof and windproof outerwear, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and swimwear if your tour includes aquatic activities.

General New Zealand Travel Tips

Q: What should I bring on my tour?

A: The essential rule for any South Island tour is layering and sun protection. New Zealand weather is highly variable, so we strongly recommend bringing a minimum of three upper body layers (e.g., thermal/t-shirt, warm fleece or jumper, and a light insulated jacket). Crucially, always carry a waterproof and windproof outer jacket to shield you from sudden rain, wind chill, or sea spray. Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes suitable for walks and uneven terrain. Due to the strong UV rays, sunscreen (high SPF), sunglasses, and a hat are essential year-round. Specific Tour Reminders: •Mt Cook & Arthur's Pass (Alpine Areas): Bring warmer layers, including a beanie/warm hat and gloves, as mountain temperatures can be significantly colder. •Kaikoura Whale Watching (Boat Trip): Prioritise your windproof and waterproof outer layers. If prone to motion sickness, take medication an hour before departure. Consider bringing binoculars and a fully charged camera to capture the marine life. Don't forget your phone and headphones for any guided train commentary - (TranzAlpine).

Q: What's the best time of year to visit the South Island?

A: Each season offers a unique experience! Summer (December-February) is popular for long days and warm weather, ideal for hiking and water activities. Autumn (March-May) brings stunning fall colours, especially in regions like Central Otago. Winter (June-August) transforms the South Island into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing and dramatic landscapes. Spring (September-November) offers blooming gardens and new life, with fewer crowds. We highly recommend the Mount Cook tour via Tekapo to experience the picturesque lupin blooms surrounding Tekapo and the snow capped mountain in Mt Cook National Park.

Q: What currency is used in New Zealand?

A: The official currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the South Island, and ATMs are readily available in towns and cities.
